A new study published by Transporation America reveals that the Orlando/Kissimmee metropolitan area ranked as the most dangerous place for pedestrians in the entire United States — closely followed by the Tampa Bay area.

Based upon publicly available data, there were 557 deaths resulting from pedestrians being hit by automobile or trucks in the Orlando/Kissimmee area between 2000 and 2009.  The Central Florida area averaged three automobile versus pedestrian deaths for every 100,000 residents in the area each year.

The study faults poor road planning for many of the deaths.  According to Transportation America, pedestrians in Central Florida face too many roads that do not have sidewalks, and roads that are primarily designed to increase the speed of motor vehicles, rather than increasing the safety of pedestrians.

As a Winter Park personal injury lawyer who represents pedestrians who have been hit, and the families of pedestrians who have been killed, by automobiles, it seems to me that the safety of pedestrians has been ignored for too long.
