Everyone knows the primary reason for having car insurance. It protects us when we are involved in a car accident, yes, but what if I told you that your car insurance will also help you if you’re involved in an accident on your bicycle? Whether a car hits you or even almost hits you, you can file a claim with your insurance company to cover your injury expenses as long as a car is somehow involved in the accident.

That’s right! Car insurance policies with the Personal Injury Protection (PIP) provision will pay for your medical expenses up to $10,000 if you are involved in a bicycle accident, involving a car, while on your bicycle. Even if the driver of the car doesn’t stop you can still be entitled to use your PIP coverage to cover your medical expenses.

If the person that hit you has liability insurance you can file a claim against their insurance. If they don’t have liability insurance, but you have uninsured motorist insurance; you can then file a claim using your uninsured motorist insurance.

One important thing to remember, in order to file a bicycle claim with your insurance company, is you must contact them within 24 hours of the accident. If you do not contact them within the allotted time frame then your insurance company will deny your claim.
