Central Florida experienced another avoidable motorcycle accident tragedy this week when a 50-year old Orlando rider was senselessly killed. According to the Florida Highway Patrol and the Orlando Sentinel, Patti Calvello was riding her motorcycle on Clarcona-Ocoee Road when she slowed for traffic in front of her. At that same time, 24-year old Damien Toler was driving along behind the motorcyclist.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers are not sure exactly why, but apparently Mr. Toler did not notice Ms. Calvello slowing in time and struck the back of her motorcycle. After the impact, physical evidence at the scene indicated that Ms. Calvello’s motorcycle was dragged for more than 300 feet.

Our hearts go out to the Calvallo family for their tragic loss. Unfortunately, as an Orlando area accident attorney who handles his fair share of Florida motorcycle accident cases, I have seen far too many instances in Central Florida where drivers fail to see motorcyclists as they safely and legally operate their bikes. The collisions that result are usually catastrophic, and often fatal. We have regularly posted reminders, but these accidents continue to happen.

All Floridians would be well to watch the short video below. It is the best illustration I have seen of what all drivers should be doing (even though it doesn’t exactly match what went on here):
