An Orange County Deputy Sheriff was issued traffic citations Sunday night in connection with a serious crash that occurred at the intersection of Tanner Road and State Road 50 in Orange County, near Bithlo.

The Florida Highway Patrol reported that the deputy ran a stop sign and pulled his police cruiser into Highway 50 and in front of an oncoming mini-van. The deputy was not on an emergency call, and did not have his emergency lights or sirens engaged at the time of the crash.

The crash was serious enough to require the “jaws of life” to cut the deputy out of his vehicle.  A total of five people, including the deputy, were taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The Florida Highway Patrol should be commended for correctly citing the deputy for causing the crash, as this often does not happen when a law enforcement officer is involved in crash.
