Summer is, for many, the most fun, relaxing and enjoyable time of the year. The weather is warm, kids are out of school, and some families even take vacations. However, summer also happens to be the most dangerous time of the year for teen drivers.

The National Highway Safety Administration has coined the term “100 Deadly Days of Summer For Teen Drivers,” to describe the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day each year.  According to statistics, this is the period each year in which teenage car crashes skyrocket. In fact, in 2013 alone, 371,645 people were injured and 2,927 people were killed in crashes involving teenage drivers.

According to the research, the main reasons behind the high number of teenage driver accidents in the summer is largely due to the fact that these young drivers are out of school, and subsequently, have more free time to drive. Furthermore, these drivers are typically inexperienced, as they have only been driving for a couple years at the most.  Importantly, the research showed that most crashes are not caused by teens driving recklessly or taking chances.

As parents, we can do our part to reduce these risks.  We should reinforce all of our strong messages about the importance of avoiding driving distractions such as cell phones, texting, and Internet use.  Teen driving hours can be limited, and limitations or restrictions can be placed upon the number of kids allowed in the car.  Of course, seatbelt use – on every trip – is a must.
